It’s already the stuff of art-world legend: inspired by a mournful look from the family pet, Queenstown landscape artist Ivan Clarke paints a quirky one-off picture of a ‘lonely dog’ to amuse his children.

Fuelled by enthusiasm inside and then outside the family, the legend of the Lonely Dog begins to grow, first as a series of paintings and drawings, then as rare hand-crafted books and limited-edition bronzes.

Today there are avid collectors of Lonely Dog art pieces in 30 countries worldwide. Additional characters, detailed back stories and multi-media ‘archive’ materials and artefacts have since been created, providing glimpses into a fully realised fantasy world.

Screen rights have been optioned by Warner Brothers and the early preparations for a Lonely Dog movie are underway.
