Barrington Building

Barrington Building Barrington facade

Gustav Kronfeld leased the site in 1903.  The four storey warehouse designed by architect John Currie opened in 1905.

Kronfeld operated as a fruit and produce merchant until his retirement in 1915.  Born in Germany, he came to New Zealand from Samoa and used his connections to develop trade between Auckland and the Pacific Islands.

Mason Struthers & Co, ironmongers and hardware merchants, leased the building and sold it to John Bates & Co, china and crystal merchants. In the 1970’s the Barrington Gallery operated by Deputy Mayor Dr. Lindo Fegusson occupied the first floor and in 1975 an eight shop arcade was installed on the ground floor linking Customs Street to Galway Street.

In 1992 ownership of the building was transferred to the Auckland City Council and the Auckland Regional Council.
