Constructed as the head office and passenger service centre of the NZ Shipping Company, one of the earliest maritime companies in NZ, designed by architects Chilwell and Trevithick.
This building belongs to the transactional period between Neoclassicism, Art Deco and the Modern Movement.
While it is distinct from it’s traditional neighbours in terms of design expression and articulation as well as materials, it is compatible in terms of scale, and contributes to the heritage streetscape character.
A third storey was added in 1971.
