Northern Steamship

The Northern Steamship Co

THE NORTHERN STEAMSHIP COMPANY OF NEW ZEALAND LTD. WAS FORMED BY A COALITION OF STEAMSHIP OPERATORS ON THURSDAY 12 MAY 1881.

The company had initial capital of £150,000 and provided regular passenger and freight services from Auckland to the Bluff. By 1921 the fleet had grown to over 40 vessels.

Passenger services faded out in the 1920’s. The building at 120-124 Quay Street was opened on 19 May 1899. Construction of the original two levels cost £6,000 and provided offices and stores. A third level was added in 1921 for more office space and a laundry.
