Proposed Hotel Site

Prosposed Hotel Site

WE’RE HOPING TO BUILD AN AMAZING FIVE-STAR WATERFRONT HOTEL RIGHT HERE AT BRITOMART. FOLLOWING EXTENSIVE PUBLIC CONSULTATION, WE’RE WORKING TO DEVELOP A MODIFIED PLAN CHANGE PROPOSAL THAT WE HOPE WILL WIN THE FULL SUPPORT OF AUCKLANDERS.

Part of our vision for Britomart is a world-class luxury hotel on Quay Street, with spectacular harbour views, bars, restaurants and public spaces. We believe it would be a brilliant thing for Auckland, attracting big-spending tourists and opening up this prime waterfront site for everyone.

A hotel of this calibre, however, will need to be significantly taller than the seven-story building currently on this site. In June 2008 we asked the Council to redefine the height limit (on this site only) in a private plan change. There have since been two rounds of submissions on our proposed plan change and extensive public consultation and discussion.

We’re delighted at the scale of the response, which proves how much Aucklanders care about Britomart and this very special waterfront site. In light of all the input, we’ve asked the Council not to proceed with our original plan change request and are now reworking our proposal. We’re particularly looking at how tall the building should be, how it will interact with the heritage buildings and how to minimise any effects on nearby Takutai Square.

The present upheaval in the world economy means it’s no longer practical to design, finance and build the hotel in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. That gives us more time to come up with a design that is absolutely right for Auckland and one that we can all be proud of.
