Quay Building

Quay Building

This building was originally designed by Robert de Montalk, an Auckland Architect, but throughout its life has gone through a number of changes.

It was originally built as a three storey building for the New Zealand Laundry Company in 1906.  In 1922 new owners added an additional two storeys.

In 1924 Robertson Bros & Lewisham, agricultural product merchants, moved into the new building and were soon joined by various tenants.  In 1927 four shop fronts were added and fourteen businesses occupied the building.

In 1935 Radio Ltd took over and used most of the building as a radio factory for decades.

In the late 1980’s Artspace and thirteen young artists funded by James Wallace had studios in the building.  In 1991 the lease was acquired by Auckland City Council.
