IN AUGUST 09 WE PUT FORWARD A SECOND PLAN CHANGE PROPOSAL ABOUT BUILDING ON THIS UNIQUE WATERFRONT SITE. THE FIRST PUBLIC SUBMISSIONS ON THIS PROPOSAL HAVE NOW BEEN RECEIVED.
In 2008 we proposed a plan change to Auckland City Council that would allow us to build a five-star hotel on this site. More recently, in response to public feedback on our initial proposal, we submitted a second plan change application.
This proposes a smaller building ‘envelope’ on the site and a strict set of design criteria governing the design quality of any new building constructed here.
The first public submission period on this second proposal has now closed. Altogether 64 submissions were received, compared to 202 submissions on our first plan change proposal.
In general, the submissions expressed concerns about the height and site intensity of a building of the proposed size, the height and contemporary character of the building in relation to the surrounding heritage buildings, and whether a building of this scale is consistent with the original plans for Britomart.
As ever, we’re delighted that Aucklanders – like us – care so much about the precinct and what gets built on this very special site. We’re now working through the issues raised in the submissions, and will continue to work closely with planning and design experts and with Auckland City Council to ensure the best possible outcome for Auckland and Britomart.
