Britomart to Host REAL NZ Festival Events for Rugby World Cup
The REAL New Zealand Festival is a nationwide celebration of heritage, culture and entertainment, staged alongside the Rugby World Cup tournament – and Britomart will be part of it.
Organised by government-backed organisation New Zealand 2011, the REAL New Zealand Festival will comprise hundreds of events around the country, celebrating arts, food and wine, heritage, culture, entertainment, business and lifestyle.
In line with the Rugby World Cup schedule, the festival will run from 9 September to 23 October, the first time a nationwide festival has been run concurrently with a RWC tournament.
Festival events at Britomart
REAL New Zealand Festival events to be hosted at Britomart include 'Black in Fashion’, an exhibition curated by the New Zealand Fashion Museum. The exhibition looks at the unique role of the colour black in the Kiwi national identity, from heritage to fashion to sport.
Another exhibition, the World Press Photo Exhibition, will display the winning images from the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography competition.
Mika's Aroha Mardi Gras, a spectacular variety show hosted by New Zealand's most flamboyant entertainer, will take place on the evening of Friday 23 September in Takutai Square.
The City Farmers’ Market at Britomart will also hold a series of special extended markets (open 8.30am till 2pm) as part of the Festival’s celebration of regional food. These will be held on the last three Saturdays of the World Cup and feature live music as well as the wares of local growers, farmers and artisan food producers.
Great Auckland experiences
“We’re delighted to be hosting these events as part of the REAL New Zealand Festival,” says Sarah Hull, Marketing Director for Britomart manager Cooper and Company.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming many international visitors to Britomart and helping make their experience of Auckland a great one. As well as these cultural events, there’ll be lots of exciting shopping and hospitality activity down here throughout the World Cup.
“It’s a great chance to highlight some of Auckland’s heritage as well as the best of contemporary New Zealand culture – including, of course, the fantastic hospitality offered here in the precinct.”
