Britomart Live Digital Art Project Lights Up Stanbeth House

Every evening after dark, the side of Britomart heritage building Stanbeth House is lit up with a dynamic slide and film show. It’s part of new digital art project Britomart Live, which will see a wide range of creative film and image content beamed via high-quality digital projector onto the 18-metre by 12-metre brick wall.

For the duration of the Rugby World Cup, the project showcased New Zealand’s natural beauty and diversity with an ever-changing lineup of rural, urban, contemporary and historic imagery, including material from Britomart’s own fascinating past. Many of the major Rugby World Cup games were also projected live onto the building.

“The projection of digital art and other interesting content in dynamic projection spaces is an exciting developing medium that we’re likely to see more of here and overseas,” says Sarah Hull, Marketing Director for Britomart manager Cooper and Company.

“It’s an idea that fits well with our vision of Britomart as a theatre for unique and diverse experiences. We’re lucky that the configuration of this beautiful historic wall facing Takutai Square lends itself so perfectly to this project.”

Interactive art project

Following the World Cup, Britomart Live will be run as an ongoing interactive digital art project, with artists and film makers invited to submit content for projection.

“We see Britomart Live as a two-way window to the world, where we can show the community amazing things and people from the Britomart community and beyond can share material with us in return,” says Sarah.

“There are all sorts of exciting possible types of content to explore – 3D mapping, live-feed content, time-lapse photography, text-based work, independent short films. It’s a silent medium, which presents some unique challenges, but we’re keen to see what Auckland’s creative community comes up with.”
