Britomart Places Honoured At Auckland Architecture Awards
Hot on the heels of Britomart’s success at the Best Design Awards, several Britomart developments have also been awarded at the New Zealand Institute of Architects’ annual Auckland Architecture Awards.
The refurbishment of historic buildings Stanbeth House and Excelsior House, undertaken by Cheshire Architects and Salmond Reed Architects for Cooper and Company, won in the heritage category.
The judges said, “There is a raw richness to this design which, because it is not overworked, serves to maintain the integrity of the original building.
“The play between old and new expresses the architect’s confidence in the beauty of the existing structure; more than that, in this consistent and well thought-out interpretation of old materials, the patina of age has been given its due deference.”
Britomart bars The Britomart Country Club and Tyler Street Garage both won in the interior architecture category for Cheshire Architects and Dorrington Architects (in association with Veneer and Shine) respectively.
Warren and Mahoney’s design for Les Mills Britomart was also awarded in the interior architecture category.
The 2011 Auckland Architecture Awards attracted a record 150 entries and yielded “a bumper crop” of 42 awards. The NZIA says this illustrates that architecture in Auckland has rarely been healthier, despite a fragile economy.
"We were presented with a very high standard of work across many building types and scales," says the jury convenor, architect Gary Lawson.
"I think Aucklanders are now very aware of the importance of good architecture, and should be confident the city will continue to get it."
